So, the latest mega rumor is that JJ Abrams is to direct Star Wars Episode VII. And while I still may seem skeptical about this yet to be confirmed rumor, I'm neither bummed or super excited.
I like JJ Abram's films. Super 8 was really good, I loved Star Trek, Mission Impossible 3 is my favorite of the series, and I didn't see Cloverfield so no comment on that one. He's the lovechild of our favorite directors from the 80's. Although he tends to skew more toward Steven Spielberg than George Lucas, he has both their DNA in his moviemaking soul. Super 8 is a love letter to Spielberg's ET and Close Encounters, and frankly Star Trek is a Star Wars movie with a Trekkie overlay and lens flares.
By the way, as a public service announcement, ENOUGH WITH THE LENS FLARE JOKES, it's already played out and no longer funny.
Watch this scene in its entirety.
It's Star Wars through and through, the technobabble is different, but Capt. Pike is clearly a Han Solo styled Captain. Right at the end there we also get to see the POV shot as the stars stretch when they go into hypersp-- I mean warp speed.
The bottom line, is that for those that really wished Steven Spielberg had been named director, Abrams is about as close as you could get to that ever being a reality.
Some people have washed their hands of the Saga already, and that's their choice, but I'm here to the end with an optimistic outlook. I love Disney, I love Star Wars, they don't always make the right or best calls, but I still come back. That either makes me like a battered wife that keeps making excuses, or perhaps it's more akin to unconditional love.
I suffered through Yuuzhan Vong, everyone else can make it through this.
There was nothing wrong with the Vong. EMBRACE THE PAIN!!
ReplyDeleteI'm holding judgment on JJ as well. Agreed his Star Trek movies were action packed but will we see tween Jedi battle Sparkling Sith? Now THAT'S the question.
