Yet Another Post Yavin story

So, I did something I haven't done in ages, I went to a brick and mortar comic shop.  I had decided to go digital only when it comes to comics a while back, unless it was a collection of multiple issues.  However when I saw the image above, of the new Brian Wood penned series simply titled "Star Wars", that would include a digital copy.  So I decided I had to get it.

Now, I'm exceedingly wary of this new series. As a whole, even though dated, I really enjoyed both the art and the stories from the old newspaper strips by Archie Goodwin and Al Williamson collected were known as "Classic Star Wars".  The story told through those strips seemed to dovetail nicely from the exodus from Yavin to the settling of Hoth as the new rebel base.  It also threw in the bounty hunter they ran into on Ord Mantell, even if he is lame.

As far as the actual content, well, it isn't horrible.  The art is decent, and the story revolves around the rebels (Leia, Luke, and Wedge in particular) scouting systems for a new base for the rebels.   Most of the major characters from A New Hope are present, although I have some issues with how Vader and Palpatine were handled.

I normally love Alex Ross as a painter and cover artist, but the covers I've seen of this series so far, look like a nod to the Hildebrandt brothers who did the Shadows of the Empire card set, and everything those painters did looked plastic-y and just not at all appealing.

I'll probably stick around and check out where the series goes, but it's starting off a little shaky.

  1. Agreed. They spend too much time in this era. It's been done before, move on. I LOVED the comic strip series! Of course I have the exact Dark Horse reprint you posted here but that series pretty much had it all. I'll be buying the new series as well, but these days it seems Dark Horse has more misses than hits with their series.

When was their last good comic book series? Legacy? Hmmm... I'll have to return to my meditating chamber and reflect...
